Babies - Day 36 - August 20, 2004

Well, you are experiencing (through David and Victoria) their juggling of tasks, lack of sleep, getting ready for the babes to come home, etc. Big yawn -- we need more sleep -- and we know that this won't really happen for the next decade or two. So you may continue to notice that we might load photos and content to the website a little bit slower than the past.

We are happy to report that the babes are back to their window view, enjoying the parking garage/Hadlock Field skyline. And the babes have new roomies, much smaller than Grace and William. Most are still in isolettes.

Going home -- anyone interested in this topic? We are! We are praying that Grace and William will come home together and it seems as though this will happen. Today we will be bringing a car seat in, which is a big step closer. The nurses will test each baby, with their monitors on, in the car seat to ensure that they are comfortable and don't have any spells (which they have not had for two plus weeks). Plus the nurses will make sure that the seat has five points and is safe for preemies.

William keeps packing on the weight, in ounces anyway, up to 5lbs, 10oz and 47.5cm in length. Grace will be our petite peanut, at 5lbs, 3oz, and 45.5cm in length. Victoria is still pumping and now using the "real" supplemental nursing system (SNS). It has two tubes (one eventually for each baby) and is intended to be used with the breast shields. We continue to experiment to find the best plan for the babes to get all the nutrition they need. As you know Victoria, she has dug her heels in a bit about wanting to make the breastfeeding work so creativity is flowing in earnest.

The babes continue to "make out." Grandpa and Grandma Jan sent out two outfits and handmade preemie swaddling blankets (see pictures). Jan is also working on quilts and all of us cannot wait to see her craftsmanship (or womanship)! Grandma Donnell sent two very soft/plush blankets for when the kids are toddlers -- one with a girl and the other with a dog. Very, very soft! We continue to read lots to the kids, including letters from many of you and books. The photos show the vastness and variety of stuffies -- the babes are quite lucky to have giraffes, dogs (and a very special stuffed poodle), bears, piglets, cars, etc.

We have interviewed two nanny/helpers. Both were delightful, very different from each other. In the next couple of weeks, we hope to make a decision and hire someone.

Our double stroller is due today and diaper service begins next Wednesday, in anticipation of the babes coming home. They will need to be at least six pounds to wear the cloth diapers and covers so we may need to continue to use newborn disposable diapers for a while yet. Victoria's Mom arrives in Maine a week from Sunday -- yea, another pair of hands and a big heart to love the rugrats (and change diapers!).

We are off to the hospital. Love to you all,

David, Victoria, Grace and William
