Babies - Day 27 - August 11, 2004

We arrived early to the hospital hoping to not miss Dr Steve -- and we connected with him! Both babes continue to grow (what a broken record!) -- Grace weighs 4lbs, 9oz, William is 4lbs, 13.5oz. When we take Grace from the crib to change her diaper, William stirs and seems to miss his sister. Grace also likes having her brother close by. It is very sweet.

In between feedings, Victoria read another book to Grace and William; this time Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie. What a great story and true story about a young girl on Matinicus Rock keeping the lighthouses lit during a particularly bad storm when her father could not get back to the island.

The kids are beginning to find their voices, William especially. And they are gently (or not?) pushing at each other while near each other in bed (see pictures). Is this something to come? Pushing and shoving? Competition? Guess we'll have to wait and see ...

We think we have found a schedule that is workable for both David and Victoria. Hopefully, the babes awake/alertness will continue to allow for morning and evening/after dinner sessions. Upon walking through the prenatal unit to leave the hospital, we talked with Tina, Victoria's nurse the night before she delivered the twins. It was nice to see her and for her to say how well Victoria looks. Thinking back to how sick Victoria before delivery, it is nice for Victoria to be on the mend and the babies too!

Keep thinking suck-swallow-breathe (or praying if you are spiritual). It seems to be working, especially for Grace (between two sessions she got 22cc of breastmilk, while William got 16cc today -- this is exponentially better than past days). For some perspective on their intake each day, William gets 312cc and Grace gets 288cc so we have a way to go but we are making progress. The nurses say that the babes don't have good memories so when they are on breast, it can be like the first time each time -- this certainly explains why this activity is tough!

We love our family and friends and very much appreciate your support,

David, Victoria, Grace and William
