Babies - Day 18 - August 2, 2004

We rushed to the hospital this morning to be in time for a diapering and feeding to learn that we arrived in between Grace and William's feedings.  The schedule has been consistently every three hours with Grace at 8am, William at 9am (for feeding, with diapering, etc. beginning 30 minutes before) but our memories are a bit spacey right now (mostly Victoria).  So we relaxed and read a bit.  Then the fun began -- changing clothes, diapers and bedding, measuring breastmilk and caffeine, weighing diapers, taking temps, etc. -- and holding the babes before the feeding begins.  William is generally a chow-monger -- he's hungry and wants to go to breast (but then poopers out quickly).  Grace is more lady-like and sweet (and has not gotten the suck-swallow-breathe reflex).  She, though, has lifted her head off my chest when resting and turned it without any assistance from Victoria.  They each have their own personality yet look very alike.

As they are twins, the umbilical cords for each fell off yesterday morning.  We cannot tell yet if they will be outies -- stay tuned!

Carolyn was the babes' nurse last night.  She works 12 hours overnight -- wow.  Very nurturing lady, as are all the nurses in CCN.  We still pinch ourselves in having the babes moved to CCN where the nurses are so woooonderful!

William weighs 1.84kg -- do you know your metric system?  That's 4lbs, 1oz.  He is 45cm in length, 17 3/4 inches. He was 41cm in length at birth.

Grace weights 1.815 kg or 4lbs even.  She is slightly longer, 46cm or 18 1/16 inches.  She was 41.5cm at birth.

Our pediatrician Dr Steve (the chief pediatric resident at MMC a few years ago) has been taking quite an interest in learning about hemophilia, as have the staff at CCN.  We brought in a few booklets for folks to skim/read and they have been making time to learn.  We are so impressed with the dedication of the medical community.

Victoria read to Grace and William today -- Winter Friends.  The babes seemed to enjoy the story!  We'll bring additional books to the hospital for the babes to listen as our wonderful friends have sent us many books.

From a hot but less humid Portland, Maine, bye for now.

Love,

David, Victoria, Grace and William
