Babies - Day 17 - August 1, 2004

It was a 7lb, 14 oz day! William is over his oritinal birth weight, now at 4lbs even! Grace has been gaining weight too, at 3lbs, 14oz for a couple of days but gaining grams. Perhaps tonight she'll be back to her birth weight or 3lbs, 15oz. Grace gets 30cc (1 ounce) of fortified breastmilk at each feeding, while William has moved up to 33cc of breastmilk. Dr. Steve is wanting to try fortification with William again, only half strength. Hopefully he can tolerate it this go around.

Both babies are still in their bubbles but we have begun talking about co-bedding. While not a new concept, co-bedding is relatively new at Maine Medical Center, as we understand. The babes need to be able to maintain their body weight and temperature (we're not there yet) but when they do, they will share a crib. We cannot wait to see this! We did not have to deal with twin-to-twin transfusion or any other issue where one of the babies was larger than the other, but still we hope that being the same crib will give William strength and energy to Grace and vice versa.

We met a new CCN nurse last night (new to us). Sally was Grace's nurse and of course, we love having Lee for William's nurse. We also learned that Terri is getting married next Saturday -- yea Terri. The nurses are camera shy, so at least we can name them for you (and we'll get a shot or two soon) -- there is Sue, Kathy and another Sue too. Sometimes nurses from the NICU work in the CCN too. Each of them is very special to us, as they really love caring for Grace and William and they are always helping David and Victoria with how best to hold the babies, give a sponge bath, or anything else we will need to do for the babes.

Victoria's Mom will be heading back to California later in the week and Victoria is already having withdrawals! We will get her out again around the time the babies come home to help us take care of them; we hope the babes will be home by late August (although no one at the hospital has indicated this timeframe). She has a full life back home and needs to tend to her activities and friends. Her Dad lives with her and I know Poppa is looking forward to seeing Mom.

Our friends LuAnne and Julianne want David and I to have some alone time out somewhere -- very sweet -- I guess the beginning of what our friends with kids call date night. Victoria is not sure that she could stay awake after dinner to enjoy a play or the movies but we will try. And Mom will get to enjoy a wonderful evening with our dear friends!

And thanks again to Anne -- Harry Potter looks and smells great (Anne gave our dog a bath and hair cut on Saturday)!

It's Sunday, so happy worshipping day, if you practice a religion.

Love,

David, Victoria, William and Grace
