Babies - Day 12 - July 27, 2004

Grace went to my breast yesterday morning. What a natural and yet strange feeling once she latched on after waking her. She hung out (so to speak) for about 15 minutes and then received her normal feeding through her tube in her nose. We stayed skin-to-skin for about an hour which was comfy. She continued to be hypoglycemic yesterday so the fortification was fully strengthened. While we wish she did not need the fortification, she gets more calories, which probably explains the slight weight gain to 3-10 (from 3-9). Maine Med has an elaborate baby security system so Grace now wears a watch-like velcro patch on her leg. The CCN nurses dress the babies so Grace was in her first sleeper yesterday afternoon.

We were so hoping that William would be joining Grace in CCN yesterday but they are monitoring William for a potential bleed (mostly due to him being a preemie with no relation to the hemophilia). There are so many potential issues for preemies it can be overwhelming at times. They are working on fortifying William's breastmilk to help him gain weight so the next 12 hours of feedings will be closely monitored for his tolerance -- and then when the CCN has room, he will join his big sister.

David and I are very thankful for our blessings as this afternoon a baby in the NICU had a severe medical emergency; we have incredible empathy for the parents of the baby. In fact, the NICU was closed for a number of hours, which was hard not to have access to William. We've been working on their different schedules and the coordination needed to diaper, take temps, etc. -- and we had set an appointment for kangerooing but it fell through. So we will redouble efforts for today and based on his past few feedings, perhaps William can be at my breast for a while.

We enjoyed a delightful dinner with our friends, LuAnne and Julianne. They brought a meal of turkey breast and salads and we really enjoyed food and friendship. It was nice to laugh and relax for a couple of hours!

Harry is getting back to his normal (and hyper) self, with the help of my Mom's attention to him. He still sleeps with us on our bed for a while when we first crash and when I'm pumping during the wee hours, David takes him out. And of course, he gets as many treats as he likes. We are constantly working on fattening him up (he burns lots of calories playing) -- besides he is such a good boy. We have been bringing the kid's blankets from the hospital home for him to smell. While we are at the hospital, Harry has been watching the Democratic National Convention. He has not told us if he is enjoying the speeches though! And it may be tough for him, as we are friendly-like politically-divided household, although having my Mom puts one side over the edge!

It looks like it will be another beautiful Maine summer day. The asiastic and day lilies are blooming, along with some ornamental grasses, snapdragons, blue mound, veronica, dianithus, and even some of our herbs are in bloom (so glad we finished the work last year!). Have a terrific Tuesday!

Love,

David, Victoria, Grace, William, Harry Potter and Sarah Wendy (the shy calico cat)
