Babies - Day 11 - July 26, 2004

Yesterday was a bit of a mixed day, although overall it was positive. Grace developed hypoglycemia (yet another common malady with preemies) and after fortifying my breastmilk, her levels went back to normal. The fortifying is also good for weight gain -- and Grace now weighs 3-9. Sundays is the measurements day. Kathy, Grace's PM nurse -- a wonderful lady -- measured her length at 41.5cm (16 3/8"). Once Grace was moved to CCN, the pediatrician we selected is now in charge of her care. Dr Steve has been on vacation so Dr Julia came by for an exam Sunday morning.

When David dropped off breastmilk yesterday early in the morning, he learned that William is ready to leave the NICU but there is no room in the inn (either the Barbara Bush or CCN wards). Hopefully Grace's closest roomie, a cute little girl will be coming home today. She is a triplet who cannot wait to see her two brothers -- and if so, then perhaps William's bubble will be transported to CCN. The CCN has curtains so I can pump at their bedside, which improves my production.

For the Moms out there, you know how hard pumping is -- I simply had no idea of the struggles, conflicted thoughts and lack of confidence I would have. David takes such ownership with pumping that I think if he could pump for me, he would. With two babies, I resolved myself yesterday that the babes would have to have their feedings supplemented with formula as they are getting a combined 57cc every three hours). So far, both babies have tolerated the formula this go-around. David is more concerned for William at this point, so he puts more of my milk in William's frig than Grace's (and what a difficult decision that is to have to decide which baby get more breastmilk). So I pray I can continue to destress about pumping.

We did have a few humorous moments yesterday. David said that he did not realize William (and Grace too) would be a "little furry." Both babes still have their pre-term hair on their backs and shoulders -- it is blonde in color. While holding Grace, she clamped onto my bra strap and would not let go! We brought home a baby blanket that Grace slept on so Harry could smell it -- he decided to lick and bit it!

My Mom continues to care for us and has become super errand woman. We are very fortunate for her and all of our wonderful family and friends to share this experience.

I'm off for a one-week check this morning and then back to the hospital (our home away from home).

Love,

David, Victoria, Grace, and William
and two four-legged kids -- Harry and Sarah
